Energy Efficient Landscapes:

Did you know that making the right choices makes an energy efficient landscape.  Keeping in mind the functionality of planting both trees and shrubs can significantly reduce your energy bills year round.

Here is some HLD Landscaping, Inc. advice to help you give your energy bills a rest:

  • Right Tree, right place:

Choose the right trees for the right places.  Consider density and growth rates first.  Dense trees, like evergreens, help protect your home from winter winds and summer sun.  Fast growing trees with wide spreading root systems should never be planted too near your home.  Their roots can cause damage to your pipes and foundations and will eventually damage you roof as well.

  • Keeping your home energy efficient:

Plant trees on your South and West sides of your home for natural home cooling during hot summer months.  Well shaded yards provide reduced air conditioning costs significantly.  Plant trees on the windy side or your home to block winter winds.  During summer those breezes will pass through the trees canopy and provide cooler summer air to reach your home.

  • Long term:

Think about the long term when planning your landscaping.  Take a look at where your home and landscape provides shade now and consider where you want your shade in the future.  A well planned landscape will provide the benefit or energy savings for years to come.

Water-Wise Landscaping:

Did you know that watering your landscape during dry periods accounts for as many as three-quarters of your total water usage?  And, many plant problems are caused from overwatering!

Conserve Water with the Right Grass:

Pick a warm-season turf grass species that is right for your lawn.  During the summer months, never cut more that one-third of the height of your grass.  Mowing below this level, root growth slows down and makes the grass susceptible to heat and drought.  Choosing low water-use grass varieties that are suited for this climate and your soil type, you will grow healthy grass that will survive dry/drought conditions, resist disease, insects and weeds and you will use less water.

Fall and Winter Planting:

Take advantage of dormant months to plant or transplant trees and shrubs.  During winter months, plants continue to grow and nourish themselves under ground in their root systems.  Come spring they are ready to grow and flourish above ground.  Make sure when transplanting and/or planting trees and shrubs in the winter months you give them an initial soaking, then no additional watering is necessary.
